School Kit
Fair Trade Your Catholic School
As followers of Christ, we embrace the challenge to have our faith shape every single part of our lives. This happens in overt ways—like going to church or treating others with kindness—but it also means our faith should influence what we value, how we spend our free time and even what we buy.
We live in an interconnected world, and everything we buy affects someone else’s livelihood, for better or for worse. As Catholic educators, we can influence how our school communities think about their purchases and consumption. The steps below are designed to help Catholic schools practice fair and ethical trade as a reflection of our faith. These simple steps include prayer, formation and action. This kit will help your school community bring to life the Catholic social teaching principle on work and the dignity of workers.
Bringing Our Faith to Life: Steps for Supporting Fair Trade at Your Catholic School
Step 1: Pray for those around the world who labor, especially those who work to produce the products we buy.
Step 2: Learn about how our Catholic faith invites us to be ethical consumers.
Step 3: Act by hosting a CRS Fair Trade sale to support artisans and farmers around the world.
- Option 1: Host an ethical fundraiser to support farmers and your school. Earn 40 percent profit!
- Option 2: Organize a CRS Fair Trade consignment sale. Interested in teaching your students about ethical giving? Consider a CRS Fair Trade craft sale with our partner Serrv. When students organize a fair trade sale, they learn about the artisans and farmers who made the products and about the labor that goes into bringing an item to market. They’ll also learn project management and marketing skills. All items are shipped free of charge. You only pay for what you sell and you can send back what you don’t sell and simply pay shipping. Check out our step-by-step guide and short how-to video.
- Option 3: Coordinate a CRS Fair Trade community order. Organize a community order with faculty and staff and earn 20 percent for your school! Simply set up an account and gather the individual orders of interested members of your community. Then, submit one order as a group. Check out our step-by step-guide and short how-to video.
- Option 4: Serve fair trade coffee and chocolate at your school. Support farmers and CRS by purchasing coffee and chocolate for your school from CRS partner Equal Exchange.
- Option 5: Become an official fair trade elementary or secondary school. Earn fair trade designation for your school through Fair Trade Campaigns and use CRS Fair Trade resources to help you meet the criteria. By building a team, committing to fair trade education and events, and sourcing fair trade products, your school can receive an official fair trade school designation—and national recognition.
