Reflections on the 2014 Fair Trade Ambassador Training
Two weekends ago I had the great honor of being a part of the most recent CRS Fair Trade Ambassador Training. From March 21-23 a wonderfully diverse group of 24 adults from across the nation joined to become CRS’ most recent volunteer advocates, committing to share the works of CRS and fair trade. As always, it was a full weekend – from sessions on fair trade, Rice Bowl, advocacy, and relationship building, to Mass, a very late dinner in Fells Point, and a fantastic tour of SERRV, there was not a moment unfilled.
For me personally, the tour through SERRV was a highlight for a number of reasons. As a long time Ambassador, I cannot count the times I have called SERRV to place an order and received quick, reliable service. Learning that there are a mere 3 representatives (and sometimes only 1) who answer the phone gave me a vastly greater appreciation for the quality of our partner. Not only are their products fantastic and superb, but their commitment to those who support them shows how much they value what they are doing. As well, when I saw the massive area (think Costco size) filled with returns and thought about the many consignment orders I have shipped back to SERRV I was struck by the fact that they process returns 1) so quickly 2) so correctly 3) and in such great quantities.
There is never quite enough time to learn or share all that Ambassadors need to hear and that is why this weekend training is such a blessing. Creating a group of people who are connected by faith, by shared experience and by a weekend in a new place creates bonding and community that is a great part of the Ambassador tradition. I will not name all of the amazing people I got to spend time with and learn from but I am grateful for each person; what a gift they bring to the world and to our universal faith! I am always awestruck by the commitment of people who CHOOSE to volunteer, and it was clear that this incredible group was at the training specifically as a response to their baptismal calling.
To the Ambassadors of March 2014, you inspire me, and I thank you for being committed not only to our brothers and sisters overseas, but also to educating United States Catholics on how to live a truly universal life; “Amen I say to you…”

It would be hard to write a better brief comment than you have on that intense, crowded, but beautiful weekend!
