Our Faith Connection

Pope Francis salutes the crowd at Revolution Square where he held a special mass in Havana, Cuba. A delegation from Catholic Relief Services participated in this event.

The CRS Delegation met with Caritas Cuba, to hear about the work Caritas is providing in the country.

CRS supports local partner Caritas Cuba, an organization of the Catholic Church founded in 1991, that implements various programs at a national level aimed at vulnerable groups in Cuban society. Caritas works with the senior citizen population, human development groups for children and children with disabilities, at risk youths and their familyÕs and the HIV / AIDS affected population. Caritas responds as well with humanitarian response to natural disasters. Caritas Cuba is currently one of the few independent non-governmental organizations in the country.

Each of us is called to do our part as consumers to ensure that the economy works for everyone. Pope Francis declared, “We must recover the whole sense of gift, of gratuitousness, of solidarity. Rampant capitalism has taught the logic of profit at all costs, of giving to get, of exploitation without looking at the person… and we see the results in the crisis we are experiencing! This Home is a place that teaches charity, a ‘school’ of charity, which instructs me to go encounter every person, not for profit, but for love.”

In a world that increasingly places value on money and materialism over the person, fair trade is by its very nature person-centered and anti-exploitative. The resources below can help you explore how Catholic social teaching relates to fair trade in more detail.
