Many ways to give fairly, generously, and prayerfully

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

I did most of my Christmas shopping last weekend, taking advantage of the Work of Human Hands shipping sale, and also stocking up on Fair Trade coffee for relatives who will be visiting soon. But I still have some giving to do, and I wanted to share a few alternatives to consider as YOU make your list and check it twice.

Some of my loved ones prefer that I not purchase “stuff” this holiday and have asked for gifts to charity. (If you feel the same way, be sure to tell the St. Nicholas in your life that alternative gifts work for you!) Here at Catholic Relief Services, you can make a direct donation to the CRS Fair Trade Fund. We then recycle that money into projects “on the ground” overseas and “in the marketplace” here in the States to promote economic justice.

You also can contribute directly to an overseas project from the CRS Gift Catalog in honor of someone who would appreciate knowing his or her gift is at work to help those in need. Purchasing a share in a microfinance project in Senegal, for example, might be just the thing your sibling or friend will remember and treasure.

As many of us are facing economic hardships, I want to recognize that there are many ways to give beyond our roles as consumers. In addition to CRS gifts in honor of someone, or specific Fair Trade purchases, CRS knows that the gift of prayer for the poor and marginalized overseas and in our own country is always a powerful force for change no matter what our financial circumstances.

At this holiday season and always, we at CRS thank you for your generosity and your commitment to our One Human Family.

Celebrating Christmas and Supporting Sudan

Friday, December 5th, 2008

During our very own Work of Human Hands holiday sale at CRS in Baltimore this week, I was one of the baristas selling Fair Trade coffee lattes and promoting handcrafts from places like Bolivia, Nicaragua and Ghana.  But Katy and I also had a lot of fun giving away items.  We raffled off a SERRV gift basket, and equipment from our friends at Fair Trade Sports.  A couple VIP folks (meaning those colleagues whose cubicles were closest to the noise of the sale!) got free  ”Stop the Violence” T-shirts supporting CRS’s work in Sudan.  The t-shirts were made in sweatshop free conditions by the women of Nueva Vida  in Nicaragua.

The shirts are also special because they remind me of my friend and CRS colleague Neal Deles, who took a position in Darfur recently.  I’m so proud of Neal for pursuing his desire to serve directly the people of Sudan, even though it means lots of sacrifices.  He is doing great out there, though, and I thought you might enjoy reading about Neal’s experiences in Sudan and his hope for the future.

If Neal’s work inspires you to do something more this holiday season, it is not too late to host a Work of Human Hands consignment sale.  Call 800-685-7572 to talk to a customer service rep and be sure to order some products from Africa in honor of all the CRS staff and partners working there!

It is Time to Host a Work of Human Hands Craft Sale

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Autumn has officially begun, and with it come preparations for the holiday season. This year, through Work of Human Hands, purchasing ethical gifts for your loved ones is easier than ever. In response to your feedback, a catalog specifically for consignment sales is now available. The Work of Human Hands consignment catalog contains all the handcrafts available for your sale, as well as a step-by-step guide to hosting a sale and cut out stories from producer’s overseas to decorate your sale and educate shoppers.

In addition to the Work of Human Hands consignment catalog, the regular catalog for Work of Human Hands is still available and contains hundreds of handcrafts not available on consignment. This is a great complimentary catalog to have available at your sale for Work of Human Hands supporters to take away with them and do their shopping at home.

As Kevin Olin, a CRS Fair Trade Ambassador and sale host in Apple Valley, California, puts it, “Who would have guessed that promoting global solidarity, fighting poverty and doing justice could all start with a cup of delicious coffee or the purchase of a beautiful gift?”

To order either catalog from Work of Human Hands please call 1.800.685.7572 or visit www.crsfairtrade.org.
